Owning pets can be very expensive, especially when it comes to vet bills. Pet insurance is a necessity for every pet owner.
Although it is another expense, that you may feel is unnecessary, it will be saving you money in the long run. If your pet suddenly falls ill, and needs lots of tests, or if you find that your cat or dog has got into an accident and broken a leg, tests, x-rays and aftercare can amount to a huge bill, spilling into the thousands.
Pet insurance will cover you for these large bills, and also take the weight off your shoulders in a time that you do not need extra worries. However, pet insurance will not cover the basics, such as yearly vaccinations, worming treatments, flea treatments or microchipping.
Local vets are starting to set up schemes to help pet owners who are finding these a little difficult to pay for each year.
Unfortunatly schemes like these have come too late for some owners who have found that their pets have become just too expensive to keep and have had to take them into centres such as Dogs Trust.
Sam Davis tells us how stray and abandoned dogs have surged since the recession started.
