Exotic pets being abandoned

Cats and dogs are not the only pets to be abandoned in the recession, reptiles are extremely expensive to keep, and more and more are being abandoned at rehoming centres.

Volunteers who dedicate their time to rescuing exotic animals and reptiles, have found themselves swamped by inexperienced owners unable to cope with their pets.

The South East Exotic Pet Rescue, based in Ashford, have been called out nearly 20 times a day to pick up abandoned pets or to help overwhelmed owners.

Reptiles, although unusual pets are also expensive to keep. They require tanks kept to certain temperatures, which drain alot of power, and can cost alot. There is also the specialist foods, such as live bugs for lizards or mice for snakes.

Owners also do not realise that these exotic pets need to be handled with care and in a particular way. If this is not done properly, the animals can become aggressive.
