A dog just for Christmas?

The Dogs Trust's famous saying "A dog is for life not just for Christmas" seems to have been ignored this year as the number of abandoned dogs around the country jumps six per cent on last year.

Dogs Trust had 1,609 stray and abandoned dogs in its 17 rehoming centres throughout December 2011, which was a six percent increase compared to the 1,523 dogs taken in during December 2010.

A particularly sad story is that of six week old Cluedo. An elderly woman was walking her dog in the woods on 27 December when she was approached by a woman wanting to sell a six week old Yorkie puppy.

The woman said she would just abandon the puppy in the woods if she could not sell him, the concerned walker bought the puppy and cared for him overnight before bringing the sorry little lad into Dogs Trust Canterbury.

Adam Levy, manager from the rehoming centre believes the puppy would not have survived the night in the woods if he had been cruelly abandoned.

Sam Davis from Dogs Trust told us what happened to little Cluedo.
